FRENCH CANADIAN SWEAR WORDS |
||||
|
To cuss in Joual is to blaspheme. Whereas the most intense English cuss words are related to sex, Joual swearing revolves around the church. The practice of using religious terms for cuss words began in the early 1800s, when Quebeckers were feeling more and more frustrated over the societal control exercised by the Catholic Church. Most of the swear words are pronounced a little differently than the religious word would be used in a religious context. Perhaps violating the pronunciation a bit added to the feeling of disrespect against the church, thus intensifying the power of the cuss word. The most severe of the French Canadian swear words are highlighted in red below. They have an intensity similar to the word ‘fuck’ in English.
